The major taxonomic impediment for scientists in Africa is the dispersed nature of the collections in Europe and America and the scattered literature. Following on from our capacity building project, in 2003 we initiated a programme to visit the major collections in Europe and Africa in order to compile a collection of digital images of the East African types. These will be published as a country-level series of checklists to faciliate identifications for inventories, surveys and conservation work in these regions.
