British Coal closed Tower Colliery in April 1994 on the grounds that it would be uneconomic to continue production. It reopened in 1995, when it was bought out by the management and men who had worked the colliery under public ownership. Tower Colliery thrived for over a decade before it became clear that its coal reserves were becoming exhausted. The colliery finally closed in January 2008.

Former Tower employees and their relatives will now be interviewed for their memories, and the objects, both paper and 3D, linked with the colliery and photographs and other images will be collected. Apart from increasing the scope of the coal collections, another output of this project is to produce a small temporary exhibition on the history of Tower Colliery in the new 'learning space' at Big Pit during autumn 2008.
