Siphon and Salver

JONES, David (1895 - 1974)

Siphon and Salver

Date: 1930

Media: oil on board

Size: 51.8 x 69.7 cm

Acquired: 1988; Gift; Mrs Doreen Lucas

Accession Number: NMW A 2041

This work dates from the time of the artist's closest association with the British avant-garde, a year after joining the Seven and Five Society. Jones excelled as a still-life artist, but painted few oil paintings. Here, the paint has been thinned with turpentine so that the white ground shows through, giving the work a luminosity reminiscent of his favourite technique of watercolour painting.
