LEIGH, Thomas (fl.1635 - fl.1643)

 Anne Davies of Gwysaney

Date: 1643

Size: 68.5 x 58.5 cm

Acquired: 1931; Gift; Major T.K. Davies-Colley

Child marriages were common during this period, and Anne Mutton was just twelve when she married Robert Davies of Gwysaney. Their portraits were painted by the artist T. Leigh for Anne’s family, the Muttons. He also produced almost identical versions to hang at the Davies family home in Flintshire. Leigh was one of the few artists working in north Wales at this time, but we know very little about him.

I have a tiny sterling (4 3/8") spoon with an enamel painting of an old woman sitting outside a cottage with a book on her lap. Below it says Ann Davies. At the top of the spoon there is Wales shield and the words: CYMRU BY BYTH, which I have been told is Long Live Wales. I have not been able to find any information about who Ann Davies might be and why her likeness would be on a small souvenir spoon. I would be happy to send pictures. Can anyone help me?
Thanks so much.
