BOUDIN, Louis Eugène (1824 - 1898)

Date: 1875

Media: oil on board

Size: 21.9 x 32.6 cm

Acquired: 1912; Purchase; Pyke Thompson funds

Accession Number: NMW A 2429

Boudin’s experience of painting harbours in his native Normandy is evident in this painting of the port of Bordeaux. His seemingly quick technique depicts in accurate detail their masts and rigging. The artist spent six weeks in Bordeaux and the surrounding area during the winter of 1874 and 1875. His delicately atmospheric portrayals of the port belie the disapproving views expressed in his letters.

We have been studying Boudin in our Art History/Art Appreciation classes. We have looked at this one and are hoping, as a class, to visit the museum, to see your wonderful collection of art.It is a pity that the Venice scene will still be on loan in America. We shall have to come again to see it!
