The Goose Girl at Gruchy

MILLET, Jean-François (1814 - 1875)

The Goose Girl at Gruchy

Date: 1854-6

Media: oil on canvas

Size: 33.0 x 24.8 cm

Acquired: 1952; Bequest; Gwendoline Davies

Accession Number: NMW A 2479

Collection: The Davies Sisters Collection

The goose girl’s wistful gaze contrasts against the lively geese honking behind her and swimming in the water. In the background are the houses of Gruchy, the hamlet in Normandy where Millet was born. This work was painted after his first visit to the area in nearly ten years. There is a sense of personal nostlagia, less common to his works from Barbizon.

Bought a poster of this painting many years ago when we visited the National Museum of Wales. It suffered minor damage when protective glass cover was broken when two trees hit our house a year ago. So it looks a trifle more aged now but still is lovely. Reminds us of a lovely trip and a more peaceful time. Can't wait until house is intact again so we can display it again.
