Caernarvon Castle and Bay

POCOCK, Nicholas (1741 - 1821)

Caernarvon Castle and Bay

Media: oil on canvas

Size: 94.5 x 121.9 cm

Acquired: 1946; Purchase

Accession Number: NMW A 2864

Born in Bristol, Pocock was apprenticed to a shipbuilder and served as a sea-captain. Around 1780 he was encouraged by Sir Joshua Reynolds to turn to painting full time. He specialised in marine subjects and in 1789 moved to London, where he was a founder member of the Watercolour Society. This view was exhibited at the British Institution in 1808. The flat, tonal handling of this oil painting reflects the artist's preference for working in watercolours.

Is there a possibility that this quite impressive marine painting could be put on show.. As mentioned previously, Pocock is a very well respected maritime painter and with so few such paintings and the Welsh connection, surely it deserves a showing, if only for a short time.

With so few marine paintings exhibited, it does seem a pity that room cannot be found for this one by Pocock, A very highly regarded marine painter and certainly the best known of the Bristol marine painters. Whatismore, it's a welsh subject!

As a great marine and coastal scene enthusiast, it would be good to see this nicely composed and executed work by one of the best of the Bristol based painters on view, especially as there are not that many of this genre on view. There is quite an Italianate feel about this particular scene, with particular similarities to the work of the Dutch Italianates, such as Jan Both.
