Louis-Dominique Cartouche was a celebrated French burglar and footpad who was betrayed by an associate and executed in 1721. In 1905-1908 Pryde also produced a lithograph of the same character as part of his portfolio of six Portraits of Celebrated Criminals. This scene bears little resemblance to the account of Cartouche's fall in Charles Whibley's A Book of Scoundrels published in 1910.
