Hagar the maid looks back imploringly at Abraham, the father of her illegitimate son Ishmael. He is banishing them both to the wilderness at the insistence of his jealous wife Sarah, who lurks in the doorway watching. A pupil of Rembrandt, Jan Victors is renowned for his theatrical large-scale depictions of biblical subjects. He was particularly drawn to the emotional drama of this Old Testament scene, and painted it several times.
