A house is shown engulfed by mountain of black material. On 21 October 1966 a colliery waste tip slid down the mountainside in Aberfan and engulfed Pantglas Junior School. 144 people – 28 adults and 116 children – lost their lives. Rielly, who was born in Wrexham in 1956, has related this painting to his own childhood memories of the Aberfan disaster. It operates as a personal expression of how the memory of the event continues to affect us.
