This sculpture is made from forged and welded iron. Butler trained as a blacksmith during the Second World War and began to make sculptures from iron in 1948. He had previously worked as an assistant to Henry Moore. Sculptures such as Crouching Woman, with their spiky linear forms, suggest Butler was rejecting Moore’s healthy and monumental figure types.
