CARRIÈRE, Eugène (1849 - 1906)

Maternity

Media: oil on canvas

Size: 54.8 x 73.3 cm

Acquired: 1952; Bequest; Gwendoline Davies

Accession Number: NMW A 2174

Collection: The Davies Sisters Collection

This work is closely related to a painting exhibited in 1890 under the title Slumber and an etching of 1888 titled Realities with the magic of a dream. Carrière often repeated his favourite compositions, which represent emotional states rather than specific individuals. In 1906 a critic a commented on this quality of his work: 'It is the soul stripped of formal accidents, It is mankind hidden under the fiction of an individual personality'. Gwendoline Davies purchased this painting in 1914.

Is this picture now on display?

I saw it a few years ago and it took my breath away, however on subsequent visits, it hasn't been available to view.

Would love to see it again.

It's funny that this painting caught my eye at the Albuquerque Art Museum. I took all 3 kids with me and this picture brought back so many memories from when they were just babes. Thank you for the experience.

I recently saw this painting at the Museum of Art in Columbia, South Carolina and was struck with awe at how much it favored my own daughter when she was nursing her infant.
