Born and trained in London, Clausen specialised in scenes of rural life and was preoccupied with the effects of light. Sketches reveal that he originally intended to portray six or seven labourers in this unusually large canvas. The subject matter recalls Millet, but the extensive sky is reminiscent of recent Dutch paintings of the Hague School.

This painting is a joy to view. I love the way the sky is painted and if you look through a magnifying glas at the figures ( ask the attendant first ) the brushwork and colours are sublime

I was unaware that a Clausen hangs in a museum in Cardiff. I live in Swansea and will make the trip down to see this one. Clausen is my favourite of all artists. His study of light intrigues me. He should be more celebrated as a British artist but alas he does not seem to be that well known.

I saw this painting today & it reminded me of another depiction of a June sky by an American artist Keith Jacobshagen;'In June the Light Begins to Breathe'(Denver Art Gallery). That is of a Nebraska sky & shows the vastness of the plains.
Clausens is different in that the subjects are the field workers & they draw our eye & the sky is almost secondary.
I had never heard of Clausen before my visit so have been interested in finding out more about him online.
