Virgin and Child

CONEGLIANO, Cima da (1459 - 1517)

Virgin and Child

Media: oil on board

Size: 47.5 x 60.3 cm

Acquired: 1977; Purchase

Accession Number: NMW A 240

The Virgin looks down affectionately at her son, cupping his foot in her hand in an intimate gesture.  The traditional red tunic signifies Mary’s virginity while the blue mantle refers to motherhood. Cima was one of the leading painters in Venice at the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. He developed a personal style based on Giovanni Bellini, from whose work derive the motifs of the marble parapet with the artist's signature on a strip of paper and the tiny Turkish horseman in the background. This picture of about 1500 is one of a series of half-length madonnas by the artist and one of the finest examples of the artist's style.

What an inspired purchase this was. It's one of my favourite paintings in the Museum, devotional painting at it's most reflective and contemplative. I think that even the master himself, Giovanni Bellini, would have been satisfied with this image of motherhood, which transcends the boundaries of The Christian Faith.
A mother reflecting on what may become of her child in the fullness of time, the hopes, expectations and of course fears.
