Caernarvon Castle

FIELDING, Anthony Vandyke Copley (1787 - 1855)

Caernarvon Castle

Media: oil on canvas

Size: 137.1 x 195.6 cm

Acquired: 1948; Gift; F.J. Nettlefold

Accession Number: NMW A 488

Principally a watercolourist, Fielding was President of the Society of Painters in Watercolours from 1831 until his death. Between 1812 and 1820 he executed several large oil landscapes including the present work. Probably based upon sketches made during a visit to North Wales in 1815, it was exhibited at the British Institution in 1819. Fielding has relegated the castle to the distance as the focal point of a classicising composition deeply indebted to Claude Lorrain.
