The sitter in this painting is thought to be Delance’s wife and their daughter, who was the original owner of the painting. His sketchy brushwork adds to the familiar and informal nature of the work. Although Delance had an academic training, here the loosely handled paint and the portrayal of light on the figure’s white dress show more the influence of Impressionism.
