Two men are using a wooden box trap to catch rabbits in the sand dunes near the once flourishing port of Newton, Glamorganshire. Born at Preston, the step-brother of the portraitist Arthur Devis, the artist worked as a topographical painter, primarily in watercolour.

The house on the opposite bank of the creek is possibly the earliest depiction of Weare House; leased to William Leyson in 1684, a sea-going farmer of Newton who, with associates owned the 30 ton ship,the "Five Brothers". In 1798 it was opened as a bathing house annexe by Thomas Marment of Pyle Inn. About 1880 it was opened as the "Ty Coch", an inn kept by William Richards.
