John Gibson (1790-1866) was born near Conway and became one of the most admired sculptors of the nineteenth century. After training in Liverpool he moved to Rome. There he entered the studio of Canova, the greatest living sculptor of the day. His ambition was to carve ideal figures of gods and goddesses. This portrait, painted while Gibson was staying with the artist, was a study for the portrait exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1848.

Dear Elaine,

Having checked the Museum's files and books relating to Gibson, I regret to inform you that we have no information on the current whereabouts of Thomas Ellerby's portrait. I wish you all success in your research.

Kind regards,

I am researching the artist Thomas Ellerby, who in 1835, exhibited at the R.A. his portrait of Gibson but so far have been unable to locate it. In 1836 he again exhibited it for the Soc. of Bt. Artists. Any information on if it still exists would be greatly appreciated. Ellerby was in Rome during the period 1829 -1835.

Kind regards, Elaine Burford.
