Ruins of Llanthony Abbey

HODGES, William (1744 - 1797)

Ruins of Llanthony Abbey

Media: oil on canvas

Size: 100.3 x 75.6 cm

Acquired: 1976; Purchase

Accession Number: NMW A 3039

The picturesque ruins of Llanthony Priory in the Black Mountains are shown here from a dramatically low viewpoint, exaggerating the size of the buildings. The sense of monumentality is increased by the diminutive size of the figures and the contrast of the architecture against the light sky. Hodges studied painting under Richard Wilson and was the official artist on Captain Cook’s second voyage to the South Pacific in 1772-5.

William Hodges was actually the official artist on Cook's second voyage to the Pacific (which did not go to Australia).
