I am aware of an exhibition this year at The Lady Leverhume Gallery showing Augustus Johns paintings. It would be wonderful if the portrait of my father Clifford Lee could be included in this exhibition. His whole family including his 97 year old widow, 3 children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren would love to see it in this exhibition.
Please consider this request, I know it is a 'big ask '.
Thank you

Was Cliff Lee the person who was chosen by Time Life to study 'The Origin of Gypsies', and travelled throughout Europe to produce a book of the same name?
This Clifford Lee as I remember had 3 daughters, one of whom married Edward (Eddie Green) and lived in Runcorn, another I believe emigrated to Australia or New Zealand.
I worked with Eddie Green and I saw the book many years ago.

John painted T.E Lawrence, Thomas Hardy, George Bernhard Shaw & Dylan Thomas. But the greatest man he ever painted was my Grandfather, Cliff Lee. Traveller, Romani, Gent, Legend.

If this portrait is ever included in an exhibition I would really appreciate it if I could be informed by e-mail. I have been to the Museum some years ago when Tim Egan allowed our family to view it in storage but it would be wonderful to see it on display.

Dear Joyce
Clifford Lee was my father and the portrait you enquire about is indeed in the National Museum of Wales. At present it is in storage and not on view to the public as far as I know. Was your father in law Roy Boyer?

i am trying to trace a portrait of a Romany called Clff Lee who lived in the New forest and was painted by Augustus John.Cliff eventually stopped travelling and lived in Maghull Merseyside. He became a close fiend of my late father in law who always told us that the painting hung in the National Portrait Gallery. However,it looks as if it may have been purchased by the National Museum of Wales. could you confirm that this is the case and if it is possible to view the painting should it be in your posession. Many thanks.
