Exhibition:New Collections: 'The Dynamic' by Sebastián Bruno

National Museum Cardiff

‘It was a cultural success but a financial disaster’ - Tony Flatman

The Dynamic is the story of Wales’ most distinctive local newspaper, its editors Tony Flatman and Julian Meek, and the community they represent as told by the paper’s former staff photographer, Sebastián Bruno.

First published in Abertillery in May 2015, The Abertillery and Ebbw Vale Dynamic had a circulation of 5000 and continued to be published fortnightly for two years. The short but intense life of the newspaper coincided with some of the most tumultuous years in contemporary British history, marked by the coming of fake news, austerity politics and Brexit. The newspaper ceased printing in 2019.

This exhibition tells the story of the newspaper through photographs, video, and audio that immerses visitors in Tony and Julian’s universe. The centrepiece is The Dynamic office installation which once occupied 17 High Street, Abertillery. This was acquired by Amgueddfa Cymru in April 2024.
