Mapping Conflict: Coin Hoards of the Civil War.

The ‘English’ Civil War of 1642-49 resulted in massive disruption and destruction. It also gave rise to an immense number of unrecovered coin hoards relative to any other period in British history, notably in Wales the spectacular Tregwynt (Pembs) find. How do they come to light? Can we relate these hoards to what was going on, even to specific events? Who were the hoarders and where did they hide their portable wealth?

Edward Besly, Numismatist, Department of Archaeology & Numismatics, National Museum Wales.
