Francis Crawshay (1811-78) was an unusually humane industrialist.

During the 1830s, when he was running the Hirwaun Ironworks and a tinplate works at Treforest, near Pontypridd, he commissioned

The subjects included workers as well as managers, all depicted in working dress and with the tools of their trade.

This unique group of images of industrial workers was probably painted by W J Chapman, an itinerant artisan artist who worked as a sporting and animal painter.

It was generously donated to Amgueddfa Cymru by a descendant of Francis Crawshay in 2012.
