Climate change is a huge issue these days. Dr Chris Cleal, Head of Botany Section, discusses plant fossils from the South Wales coalfield. He will look at the importance of the traces of ancient tropical forests left in the valleys and how they can inform us about climate change around the world.

This ammonite, Sphenodiscus lenticularis, lived about 70 million years ago, just before ammonites, together with the dinosaurs, became extinct. When this one was preserved, the shell was naturally replaced by beautiful minerals, giving an iridescent sheen. Its shape shows that it was a fast swimmer.
