Biscuit porcelain bust of a man with a moustache and pointed beard in early 17th century dress (doublet, gown and collar), on a pedestal in the form of a fluted column with a moulded spreading foot. The jurist,theologian and philosopher Hugo De Groot (1583 - 1645), was imprisoned as an ally of Oldenbarnevelt by Prince Maurice of Orange in 1619. He subsequently escaped to France, where he became Swedish ambassador. After a posthumous portrait by Aert Schouman (1710 - 1792) engraved by Jacobus Houbraken ( 1698 - 1780).
