Sir John Aubrey, 2nd Bart. (c.1650-1700)
Artist: CLOSTERMAN, John (1656-1713)
Sir John Aubrey's full wig and elaborate dress reflect his high social status. He was 2nd baronet of Llantrithyd, Glamorgan; Sheriff of Glamorgan in 1686, and an English MP from 1695. The artist John Closterman was born in Germany and trained in Paris, before moving to London in 1681. The rich colours and extravagant fabrics shown here are typical of the English Baroque.
