Sir Thomas Mansel (1556-1631) and his wife Jane, Lady Mansel

Artist: BRITISH SCHOOL, 17th century

Thomas Mansel and his second wife Jane Pole hold hands in this double portrait. Portrayals of affection such as this are rare in early British portraiture. The Mansels of Margam Abbey, Glamorgan, were one of the wealthiest families in south Wales. This is reflected in the couple's dress and pose. Thomas was MP for Glamorgan and was prominent at the Court of King James I. Painted about 1625, husband and wife are touchingly shown holding hands. The marigold held by Lady Mansel is perhaps a symbol of their daughter Mary.
