The Stronghold of the Seison
BRETT, John (1830-1902)
The ‘Seison Stronghold’ is Caernarfon Castle, built by Edward I of England following his conquest of Wales. Symbolically, the mountains of Snowdonia tower majestically above the man-made fortress. The tide is out and kittywakes feed on the sandbars. The Pre-Raphaelite painter John Brett visited Wales regularly from the late 1860s and exhibited this picture at the Royal Academy in 1879.
