Middle Bronze Age gold bracelet

This is a round-sectioned bar of gold, which has been simply bent into an oval bracelet shape. The lack of careful shaping of the bar and the ends (terminals) of the bracelet suggests this was unfinished when lost or buried. Therefore, it is called a 'pre-form' bracelet and is thought to be of Middle to Late Bronze Age date (1500-800 BCE).

This is a round-sectioned bar of gold, bent into a roughly oval shape. The bar has been prepared and polished, but the bracelet appears to be unfinished. The bar is thicker towards the middle of the bar and tapers to plain, unelaborated terminals with rounded ends that do not meet. There is a crack in the gold near the centre of the bar on one side, which is 19.5mm long. The cause of this is unknown. Overall the object can be considered a 'pre-form' bracelet.

Project Title: Gold in Britain’s auriferous regions, 2450-800 BC: towards a coherent Research Framework and Strategy. Status: Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Network Grant funded project (2018-2019)
