A cottage in a cornfield
Artist: CONSTABLE, John (1776-1837)
Constable studied at the Royal Academy Schools and developed a remarkably spontaneous technique. Together with J.M.W.Turner, he was a key figure in British landscape painting. This small but intense picture of a cottage near the artist's birthplace of East Bergholt in Suffolk derives from a sketch of 1815. Exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution in 1817-1818, Constable sold it to W.Venables, later Lord Mayor of London, for 20 guineas in 1818.

Hi there June
I'm so glad you enjoyed the exhibition in Princeton. The paintings will now be cleaned up and conserved - some will go back on display, and others will have a rest in storage to recover from their long journey!
If you are interested, we have a print on demand service which makes fine canvas and paper prints - it's as close as you can get to the real thing in your living room. You'll find this painting, and many more landscapes from the exhibition, available at our Print on Demand Shop.
Thanks for your comment,

I was very drawn to the Constable painting of the cottage. my eye was drawn to the five bar gate and then upwards to the cottage . the field between bathed in a glorious soft gold light. A charming composition that I had not seen before. Thank you for loaning this collection to Princeton.
Sincerely June and Dante Arcamone
Dear Judith,
Thank you for your comment, although we can provide opinions on works of fine and applied art by appointment, we can not unfortunately offer a valuation service. We suggest you contact a reputable dealer.
