Stockings
Stockings knitted in fancy stitch. Black chevrons on white ground. The black and white stripes are each made of four rows of stitches. A 7cm wide section at the top edge is unpatterned (white). The top 2.5cm is knitted one knit/ one purl. The black yarn is wool and the white yarn is cotton.
These stockings were knitted in the late 1800s. They were used by the donor's family in Capel Bangor for the laying out of deceased relatives. Stockings made for this type of use are sometimes referred to as 'death socks'.
