Cup and saucer

Cylindrical cup with rectangular handle, shallow footring, saucer with flat base and deep sides; each with a central reserve painted with classical figures within a raised gilt border, rich blue ground decorated with gilt border pattern of anthemia and scrolls within raised gilding; saucer sides and upper part of cup with grey/blue ground bearing diamond and rectangular reserves of a red/brown, decorated with grisaille grotesques, all within raised gilt border between gilt scrolls. The subject of the cup is, Mars et Venus, dont Apollon decouvre le comerce et en enstruit vulcain, engraved by Noel Lemire (1724 - 1801) after Francois Boucher (1703 - 1770), from the Abbe Banier's edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses, (1767-71), pl.50
