Tea urn

Heming, Thomas

Tall vase-shaped tea urn, standing on a square plinth, rising from a mahogany base, faced with ebonised strips, on four silver ball feet, plinth sides ornamented with a running pattern of circular foliate straps on a matted ground, spool-shaped stem ornamented with embossed and chased foliage, and with collar engraved with crest of a demi-wolf saliant, ovoid body linked to stem by a twist or bayonet fixing below the tap, realisticly chased with swags of cloth pendant from four fictive rings, the projecting spout fluted and with a lion's head terminal, T-shaped bone handle, neck embossed and chased with stiff leaf, and rising to a beaded laurel rim, two upturned loop handles at the shoulders with foliate terminals and bound leaf ornament; shallow, bell-shaped cover with knurled top, rim engraved with the same demi-wolf saliant crest; tall beaded fruit finial on a pierced telescopic tube (to release steam. Engraved above the tap with a coat of arms quarterly, azure a wolf saliant (Rhys ap Teudur) and or, on a chief three mallets (Wogan) impaling gules a chevron between three lions rampant or (Hwfa ap Cynddelw for Owen of Orielton) on a ribbon-tied shield between palm fronds and flowers, motto: Y DDUW B'OR DIOLCH below. Body contains a substantial silver sleeve, projecting from its lower edge, which is closed at the top.
