Auger
A twist auger for boring holes 34.5mm / 1.35in diameter. It comprises of a bit (the cutting part), on a shank which ends in a tang to fit into a wooden handle. The screw lead at the tip of the bit pulls the auger through the hole, reducing the amount of pressure required. (Salaman Dictionary of Woodworking Tools)
There is a weld in the shank between the bit and the tang. The shank from the tang is wider than that from the bit. The shank has a circular cross section [RP; 16/04/2009]
