The Train
Olga Chernysheva is a Russian artist who works primarily with photography and film. The Train (2003) is possibly her best-known video work. A camera moves through a Moscow intercity train, catching snippets of the passengers: commuters, musicians and poets alike. The black and white images are set to Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 21, giving the film a contemplative mood. The film culminates with a man moving through a carriage, collecting coins as he recites the 19th century poetry of Alexander Pushkin on a 21st century commuter train.
