S.S. ETONIAN (painting)

unknown

Port view of the S.S. ETONIAN at sea. Signed bottom right, undated. Framed.

In 1896 the main activities of the enterprise established by John Mathias were moved to Cardiff where a new firm, the grandly-titled 'Cambrian Steam Navigation Co. Ltd.', was established. For some unknown reason, the company later began to name its ships after public school; the first of them was this steamer, the Etonian, built by Grays of West Hartlepool in 1901. Sold to Italian owners in 1913 and renamed PIETRO, she was torpedoed on 23 December 1917.

S.S. ETONIAN was a tramp steamer of 3805 gross tons built by Grays of West Hartlepool in1901 for John Mathias & Sons. Sold to Italian owners in 1913 and re-named PIETRO. Sunk by German submarine U35 off Cape Palos on 23 December 1917.
