A Welsh collier

Artist: WALTERS, Evan (1893-1951)

This is one of two portraits by Walters of the collier Thomas Rees (the other being accession No: NMW A 2229) who originally came from Llangyfelach. He was a distant cousin of Evan Walters and the scar which is visible on his face was the result of a pit accident.

There are several paintings by Evan Walters which bear the title - "A Welsh Collier"

This is a painting of my grand father - Thomas Rees - and was done in 1936.

Thomas Rees was born in nearby Bryntywod and lived at this time in Tirdeunaw. There were at least 2 other portraits entitled "A Welsh Collier" featuring my grandfather.

This should not be confused with "The Welsh Collier " (housed in the Glynn Vivian, Swansea)which features a different subject - see this link - http://www.swanseaheritage.net/article/print_ver.asp?ARTICLE_ID=1833
