Cardigan Bay
This tranquil view is probably southwards from the village of Aberarth, near Aberaeron, towards New Quay Head. Cox is better known for his rugged views of Snowdonia and windswept scenes at Rhyl, but he exhibited a number of watercolour views of Cardigan Bay in the 1820s and 1830s. In 1840 Nicholson's 'Cambrian Traveller's Guide' noted that the road from Aberaeron to Aberystwyth 'takes the direction of the coast, and generally forms a bold outline variegated with occasional promontories and bays'. Picturesque figures walking away from the painter, such as these men carrying shrimping nets, are often found in his late oils.
