Sash

Leathermen Cymru (LeatherMen Cymru was founded in 2017 by the first Mr Leather Wales. It is a community of leather and fetish men who are into leather, rubber, and uniforms, and who are based in Wales.)

Mr Leather Wales sash (plus year panels for the first winner in 2016 and final winner to wear this sash in 2023). Used for the first Mr Leather Wales in 2016 and subsequent Mr Leather Wales until 2023 when this particular sash was retired. Mr Leather Cymru/Wales 2024 was the first to use the new sash.

Sash made from black leather. Front applied onto a backing: edges of front layer are turned back by 1.5cm and machine stitched against a black leather backing using black thread. To be worn by draping over right shoulder. Front of sash has inscription made from capital letters cut out of blue (EAGLE) and white (MR LEATHER WALES) leather. Each letter is appliquéed by being machine-stitched to the upper layer of leather prior to joining it to its backing. In only two areas do the stitches extend through into the backing: on the 'G' in EAGLE and the 'R' in LEATHER. The lettering for 'EAGLE' are stylised, in keeping with the logo of the 'EAGLE' night club in Cardiff.

Two separate panels, each with applied numbers in white leather spelling out the year 2016 and 2023 respectively are made in the same way as the sash. The back of each panel has been fitted with soft (looped) Velcro around all 4 edges which attach to corresponding hard (hooked) Velcro on the sash itself. The Velcro would have been machine stitched to the backing before stitching on the upper/front layer. On the '2016' panel, there are some stitches (those applied to the '0') that extend through into the backing. The leather used for the 2016 panel is very smooth front and back, whereas the leather used for the 2023 panel is more (naturally) textured.

Three domed popper buttons are applied to the front end of the sash and two popper buttons are applied to the back. It is not clear why there is an additional button on the front; it might be to allow a degree of adjustment for the wearer.

Woven manufacturer's label attached to bottom edge, near front corner: white lettering on red ground.
