Bronze Age Barrow with Ysgol Plasmawr

In April 2018 pupils from Ysgol Plasmawr who were working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award spent the day at St Fagans building a Bronze Age Barrow. Over the previous months the pupils had worked on organising a launch event for the barrow – part of which included physically building the barrow.

Students were encouraged to think creatively when putting together the programme for the event. The event included Bronze Age re-enactors and demonstrations of pre-historic technologies. This was an active learning experience and an opportunity to enthuse students to learn outside of a traditional learning environment.

Within the barrow the students buried a range of grave goods, including bronze daggers, pottery, and the remains of a cremated pig. The barrow will be excavated in 10-20 years to better understand how the mound and contents have changed over time.

We hope to be able to invite some of the participating students back for the excavation!
