Project

Cross-curricula working with Barry Island Primary

We were approached by Barry Island Primary School in 2018 to discuss the possibility of collaborating on a whole school project. Barry Island Primary are a Pioneer School focussed on curriculum reform. In January 2019 we met with all the teachers from the school on an INSET day to discuss ideas further.

It was decided that each year group from Reception through to year 6 would take part in the project with each class focussing their work on a different historic building found on site. Each class would complete a term of work using St Fagans as a theme and focussed on their selected building. Each class visited the museum, some more than once, to study their building in detail and take their findings back to school.

Each class completed a range of cross-curricula work during the project. Films were made, models of buildings were built, and diary entries were written among many other pieces of work. In July 2019 to celebrate the work, pupils returned to St Fagans to showcase their work and show the films they had made on a giant outdoor screen. A number of parents also attended the event to see the work.

With the new curriculum in Wales on its way, this project was a great opportunity to show how St Fagans can be used as a resource for cross-curricula work.
