Amgueddfa Cymru looking for designers for the National Eisteddfod 2018 Chair

Following the official ceremony announcement that the National Eisteddfod will take place in Cardiff in 2018, we are already thinking towards the Chairing Ceremony. St Fagans National Museum of History celebrates its 70th birthday in 2018, and to help mark this the national institution has decided to sponsor the Chair. This week sees the beginning of the process of appointing a designer or maker to create the Chair.

St Fagans has championed crafts in Wales since it opened in 1948, and sponsoring the chair for the National Eisteddfod in 2018 coincides with the Museum’s 70th birthday – a fitting celebration which continues the Museum’s tradition of supporting Welsh craft and makers.

St Fagans has an extensive collection of Eisteddfod chairs and related objects, and the Museum’s collections have inspired artists and makers over the years. We would like to see a connection with St Fagans in the design – this could be inspiration from the collections, the buildings or just stories and memories from the Museum.

Nia Williams, Director of Learning & Engagement, said,

“We would like the designer or maker to create elements of the Chair in St Fagans’s brand new building, Gweithdy, which will be opening to the public this July. We would also expect the designer or maker to interpret or display the process of making their work to visitors at the Museum.”
