Don't miss a unique chance to see real live Roman Gladiators in south Wales

2006-06-08Come to Caerleon Roman Amphitheatre this July for your chance to see real live Roman Gladiators showing off their skills.
Over the weekend of 1 & 2 July, the Roman town of Caerleon becomes the setting for an amazing Military Spectacular. The highlight of the weekend is an appearance by ten members of the Italian gladiatorial group Ars Dimicandi, who have studied the skills of gladiators and perform armed combat, wrestling and boxing as it would have been done 2000 years ago.
Joining them will be the Ermine Street Guard, who will march into the Amphitheatre and display the full pomp and grandeur of the Roman Empire. They bring artillery that catapults missiles high into the air, and horses that perform in the arena, showing the skill and daring of the riders.
In between enjoying these spectacles, you can wander round the Roman tented village showing fascinating Roman crafts and skills, with traders, doctors, you can even have a Roman massage! Children can join the Junior League and march into the Amphitheatre under the watchful eye of the Roman Guard.
Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales operates seven national museums across Wales. These are National Museum Cardiff, St Fagans: National History Museum, National Roman Legion Museum, Caerleon, Big Pit: National Coal Museum, Blaenafon, National Wool Museum, Dre-fach Felindre, National Slate Museum, Llanberis and the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea.

Entry to all the museums is free, thanks to the support of the Welsh Assembly Government.
If you really want to meet and talk to a Roman gladiator, the event takes place between 11am and 5pm on 1 & 2 July. Admission is £4 adults, £2 children and £10 families.
Photo opportunities can be arranged beforehand on request. Photographs will be issued to local press following the event.
