Family fun in south-east Wales this summer

Bring the family along to the National Roman Legion Museum or Big Pit this summer for a whole host of fun for everyone!

Whether you're interested in rocks or butterflies, peg dollies or music, there's something for you at a series of themed workshops at Big Pit throughout August.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 31 July to 28 August, families can take part in workshops and learn more about the environment and social life around the coal industry. Activities take place 11am – 4pm.

  • 31 July – 4 August – Geology Week. Follow the geology trail around Big Pit and learn about how layers of rock were formed.

  • 7 – 11 August – Big Pit Eisteddfod. Take part in our mini Eisteddfod: make your own musical instrument to play, write a poem or draw or colour a picture to be displayed in our special ‘Oriel'.

  • 14 – 18 August – Nature Week . Find out what lives in the environment around Big Pit. Take part in our pond dipping and meet the little animals that lurk at the bottom of the water.

  • 21 – 28 August (including Bank Holiday Monday) – Toys & Games Week. Play with Victorian toys and have a go at making your own peg dolly or Victorian spinner.

Meanwhile, at the National Roman Legion Museum in Caerleon, you can find out about how Romans lived day to day with the 'Romans in Residence'. Visitors can meet a blacksmith, a potter, a shoe maker and a cook. Learn about Romans as you wander around the encampment, and have a go at some of the activities on offer.

All activities at both museums are completely free of charge.
