Together with St Fagans' Learning Department, Hafal ran an art course over the summer months, giving members of the organization the opportunity to express themselves creatively in the serene environment of the open–air museum.

Inspired by some of St Fagans' popular historic buildings, students tried their hand at painting, watercolours, using charcoal and drawing, under the guidance and expertise of teacher Caroline Smith, ultimately creating a varied collection of art pieces.

One student described the course as totally different to what she had imagined: “I thought it would just be watercolours but it has turned out to be much more than that,” said Susan Callan from Roath. Claire Evans from Canton completed the course last year and decided to do it again:

“The course helps you put everything into perspective and gives you room to express yourself.”

Lynda Woollard, Service Manager of Hafal Cardiff commented:

“We are delighted with what the students have produced this year and they will each be rewarded with a special certificate. Courses such as these are part of our recovery model, to give members the opportunity to learn new skills and to build their self confidence. I would like to thank Caroline Smith for leading the group and St Fagans' Learning Department for their backing and co-operation.”

Hafal Cardiff is based at Ysgubor Fawr in St Fagans and offers work opportunities and training to people recovering from serious mental illness. John Williams-Davies, Director of Museum Operations, Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales said:

“Hafal is much more than a tenant to Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales. We are very proud to be able to offer them facilities on site and the support to conduct such valuable courses for their members.

“St Fagans' open-air site, the varied buildings, architecture and periods depicted offer a perfect creative learning environment.”

The artwork will be on display at Oakdale Workmen's Institute at St Fagans and is on view for the public to enjoy. Entry to the Museum is free of charge thanks to the support of the Welsh Assembly Government.
