Are you Newport's fussiest eater?

If you’re someone who turns your nose up at vegetables or shies away from unusual foods, you could be a prime contender for the National Roman Legion Museum’s fussy eater award.

At this year’s Roman Military Spectacular held in Caerleon on 7 and 8 July 2007, chef and food historian Sally Granger will rise to the challenge of feeding the fussiest eater in Newport and the surrounding area. So the search is on.

The National Roman Legion Museum is looking for a volunteer who’s willing to try recipes which derive from Ancient Rome – dishes which Sally Granger hopes will change their perceptions of food.

The Romans had a reputation for serving very strange food such as ‘rotton fish sauce’ and flavouring it with too many spices. This reputation for bad food is not deserved, in fact Roman food is particularly good and Sally prides herself on being able to convert the ‘pickyist eater.’

Using techniques such as spit roasting, boiling and cooking using a tandoori oven, Sally Granger will be demonstrating how ingredients used by the Romans such as honey, fish sauce, lentils and different herbs can transform basic dishes into appetising meals.

So if you’re someone who dislikes a number of foods, or know someone who would suit the ‘fussiest eater’ title, email the National Roman Legion Museum at fussyeater@museumwales.ac.uk and describe your or their eating habits in no more than 100 words. Remember to include your name and contact details.

The chosen person will be asked to join the festivities at the Roman Military Spectacular and take part in the chef’s challenge, to taste dishes with ingredients they would usually refuse.

The Military Spectacular - an event for the whole family - is held on 7 and 8 July 2007 between 10am – 5pm. Tickets can be booked in advance by contacting the National Roman Legion Museum on 01633 423 134 and cost Adults £4, Concessions £2, Family £10.
