Gardeners' World, Roman-style

Visitors to the National Roman Legion Museum will be able see an extra-special feature taking shape over the next few months. Work starts this week on a new Roman-inspired garden at the Museum in the heart of the Roman stronghold of Caerleon.

The garden will incorporate traditional elements of Roman design, inspired by Roman gardens from around the Empire such as a pergola, ornate raised flower beds, a shrine, box hedging and frescos.

Dai Price, Museum Manager, said:

“We have been looking forward to starting work on the Roman Garden for some time, and we are developing a range of resources and interpretation to help visitors find out more about Roman horticulture and its uses in everyday life.

“Work will begin by planting 22 new Cypress Trees during the winter, before laying new paths, painting frescos and planting the garden in the spring.

“The Roman-inspired garden will provide a fresh backdrop for many of the activities that already take place at the Museum throughout the year.”

The Roman-inspired Garden will be open to the public by the summer of 2008.
