From volunteer to Museum Manager

Dai Price chosen to lead the team at the National Roman Legion Museum

He started his career as a volunteer at Ceredigion Museum; spent six years as Gwern the Celt at St Fagans: National History Museum's Celtic Village; developed Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales' education programme on the Romans; and now Dai Price from Aberystwyth has been appointed as the National Roman Legion Museum's Manager.

"The collection belongs to the public so I'm really interested in finding out what they want," said Dai Price, who will now take the lead at one of Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales' seven museums, which houses the nation's Roman collection.

Having worked as an interpreter at St Fagans' Celtic Village before becoming the Education Officer at the National Roman Legion Museum, Dai has a good understanding of what visitors want to see. He'd like to use this knowledge and experience to develop the ultimate day out for people who come to the Museum in Caerleon.

"We have been experimenting with new technology to give our displays a new dimension and we're looking to expand our capabilities," continued Dai. "We also want to re-visit how we display our collections to make them as relevant as possible to our visitors."

Dai is hoping to give the team at the Museum, who work exceptionally hard behind the scenes, a new focus. He concluded:

"It's my job to ensure that the staff are motivated and that our tradition of effective teamwork is upheld. We have a commitment to excellence at the National Roman Legion Museum that ensures all visitors have an enjoyable day out. "

Dai Price studied History at Cardiff University and took particular interest in aspects of medieval history, archaeology and Welsh history. During the summer, he volunteered at Ceredigion Museum - experience which helped him gain a full time job working on the Aberystwyth Ddoe initiative for the Museum.

He then moved to the outskirts of Cardiff where he worked to develop visitor sessions at St Fagans' Celtic Village, which shaped his career in education. He progressed to Education Officer at the National Roman Legion Museum before being offered the role of Museum Manager.

Entry to the Museum is free, thanks to the Welsh Assembly Government.

Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales operates seven national museums across Wales. These are National Museum Cardiff, St Fagans: National History Museum, National Roman Legion Museum, Caerleon, Big Pit: National Coal Museum, Blaenafon, National Wool Museum, Dre-fach Felindre, National Slate Museum, Llanberis and the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea.
