QUARRY! Exhibition of camera club photos

Photographic Exhibition by Blaenau Ffestiniog and Dyffryn Ogwen Camera Clubs

National Slate Museum Llanberis:  21 June – 3 September  2010

Two north Wales camera clubs join forces at the National Slate Museum Llanberis this Summer to showcase some of the photos in their collections.

Depicting the theme of 'Quarry’, the exhibition includes many of the usual industrial aspects of the industry but also features abstracts, landscapes and character portraits. Ffion James, Events Co-ordinator at the museum explained:

“We asked Blaenau Ffestiniog and Dyffryn Ogwen camera clubs to provide us with photographs that they had taken of the slate quarries of north Wales as we wanted to get their outlook on the quarry. The photos they’ve given us reveal their own interpretation of the theme and really show the diverse beauty of North Wales’s slate quarry industry, its villages and its people, as it was in the past and as it is in its various guises today.”

“As we looked through the photographs it was interesting to see some of the similarities that occurred through time and from the two different clubs, so we’ve tried to reflect this in the exhibition. It’s interesting to see that although many things have changed – for example health and safety issues have increased and machines have replaced men in the modern quarries of today – yet  many things haven’t changed – most notably the colourful characters that work within the industry and the fact that the slate splitting is still done by hand’.

Said Dr Emyr Roberts of Dyffryn Ogwen Camera Club

“We’re very grateful to the National Slate Museum for the invitation to take part in this exhibition. It’s an unique and excellent opportunity for our club members to show their work in a professional exhibition of high standard.”

The museum is eager for  budding photographers to add any images they may have of the quarries or the slate industry past or present to the photo website FLICKR and tag them with ‘slate’ or ‘National Slate Museum’.

The exhibition opens on 21 June 2010 and runs until 3 September 2010 and admission is FREE.
