Christmas Card display proving popular at city Museum

Christmas cards have come to life at the National Waterfront Museum with a series of bespoke designs by creative talent at Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn in Swansea.

As part of a school project, the sixth form pupils decided to use their imagination and develop a selection of cards with a strong Welsh theme featuring comical rugby dragons and skating fluffy sheep.

Each card is accompanied with a 3D model of the front cover using a selection of materials including plasticine, paint and wood. During the model-making process, the pupils were able to learn brand new skills including sewing, lighting and photography.

The project, which is sponsored by The Vale Refinery Clydach, creates an opportunity for the pupils to think creatively and take part in a real-life enterprise venture - it also counts towards their formal studies.

Speaking about the initiative, Community Coordinator at the school, James Williams said: “It all started with the idea of making a school Christmas card, something that would have been a big departure from what we have done in the past, and one that could be worked on by pupils as a group.

“The whole experience has been fantastic and they’ve all really pulled together and worked as a team. It’s great that we’re able to showcase our work at the National Waterfront Museum and we do hope visitors enjoy the display.”

Speaking about the school’s involvement with the Museum, Gallery Author Andrew Deathe said: “This is the second year pupils at Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn have worked with us on an exhibition and we’re delighted to welcome them back once again. The display, which arrived over the weekend, has already created a lot of interest amongst visitors and the cards themselves are on sale in the shop.”
